Emergencies That Fuel The Spirit

Emergencies are interesting because they are never planned. WHAM. Sometimes it feels like it smacked you in the face when you were least expecting it. Maybe you had it in the back of your mind and now you're in it and you are stuck like glue.

As an ER nurse, I saw countless families running in with one shoe off, pants falling down, and hair half-groomed. Many times they didn't even notice because they were in a fight or flight response for their family member. Often when emergencies happen we don't think about the details, we just do it.

We don't sit and wait, we go. With emergencies, the first instinct is to grab everything that is in arms reach and run out the door as fast as you can. We grab the most important things usually: wallet, phone, and the person. Everything else doesn't matter at that point. Pair of clothes? Nah. Hair combed? Who knows. Teeth brushed? Nope. We don't worry about the details because we know the most important thing to do is. . . get them to the hospital.

God wants to be that for us too.

He wants to be our emergency [Go - To] in times of worry, stress, hopelessness, or sadness.

He wants our first instinct to be crying out to him, not our friends. He wants our first reach to be grabbing the Bible, not our phones to post on Facebook about it. He wants our first conversation to be with Him, not calling JoJo to tell them about it. He wants us to ask Him, not ponder the what-ifs by ourselves.

He wants to hear us like David cried out to him saying "Help me, O Lord my God! Save me because of your unfailing love." Psalm 109:26

He wants to be our first, but He can only be our first when we put Him first

In Mathew 11:28 "come to me, all who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you because I am humble and gentle in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light."

I pray this week the first thing you do is take all of your burdens to the foot of the Cross. Lay them down and pick up His yoke. I pray that Jesus is the first thing that comes to your mind this week. I pray that Jesus is the first thing you say in any emergency this week. Even when you least expect it, I pray the first thing you do this week is reaching to grab your Bible when something tries to whack you down. Amen.
